LinkedIn is one of the fastest growing social networking sites in the world, boasting over 300 million users. With so much competition out there, how do you go about creating a compelling profile that grabs the attention of recruiters? Your LinkedIn profile is an excellent opportunity to market yourself, and here’s how you can develop a stellar profile that shines.
Incorporate keywords in your “skills” section: Recruiters typically run regular searches to find candidates of interest. Keywords make it possible for them to find you in these search results. Many people seldom show up in searches because they don’t use keywords, even though they have fantastic profiles. An excellent way to be visible is to put your keywords and search terms in the skills section so your profile will show up when someone searches for that word or phrase. You can highlight up to 50 skills on your profile which means that there is plenty of room to place keywords that describe your areas of expertise.
Optimize your headline and photo for more clicks: When recruiters run a search on LinkedIn, they are presented with ten people (per page) to choose from. If you want to get more clicks on your profile you need to make sure your headline and photo look great, as this is the first thing recruiters’ see. A photo can speak volumes about your character so be sure that you have a professional image that is clear and bright. Additionally, it is always best to include a picture where you are smiling as this make you more inviting to the viewer. A close-up photo (from the shoulders upward) is also ideal as oppose to one where you are far away and the viewer cannot see you face.
In term of your LinkedIn headline, the best thing you can do is write a headline that represents the work you WANT to do. This is especially true for career changers. The good news it that you can included a variety of keywords in your headline which speak to your interest and areas of expertise.
